How to Wash Yellowed Pillows

No one wants to sleep on yellowed pillows. However, all pillows will eventually change colors. In fact, it is the accumulation of sweat that causes pillows to turn yellow. As sweat dries, it becomes yellow. And over time, the pillow begins to take on an old and stained appearance. This is why we use pillow cases – to keep your pillow from getting stained. Nonetheless, even with a pillow case you can still expect some yellowing to take place.

Here is a guide on how to wash yellowed pillows – by hand and in the washing machine.


  • Hot water
  • Cold water
  • Powdered dishwasher detergent (1 cup)
  • Laundry detergent (1 Cup)
  • Chlorine Bleach or any other alternative. (1 Cup)
  • ½ a cup of Borax
  • Enzymatic cleaner

Machine Washable Pillow Procedure

  1. First ensure that your pillow is machine washable by checking its care-label. Most pillows are machine washable.
  2. Remove the pillow case and any other protector.
  3. Fill the washing machine with hot water to about 1/3 full.
  4. Add ½ cup of Borax, 1 cup of chlorine bleach (or the natural alternative), 1 cup of laundry detergent, and the 1 cup of powdered dishwasher detergent. Before adding the pillow, first start the machine and let it agitate for several minutes so as to ensure that all the detergent dissolves.
  5. Now add the pillows and fill the washer with hot water. You should wash two pillows at once so as to enable the washer to balance the load during the spin cycle.
  6. Allow the pillows to be agitated for a few minutes. Turn them over so as to allow both sides to get the full agitating effect within the hot water. Run the machine for a few more minutes.
  7. Set the washer to the rinse cycle.

Drying the Washed Pillows

  1. Use low heat setting for synthetic pillows or air cycle for down and feathers pillows.
  2. Put the pillows in the dryer.
  3. Add some clean tennis balls (or cover the balls in clean socks) to fluff the pillows the pillows flip-dry.

Non Machine Washable Procedure

  1. Remove the pillow case and any other protector.
  2. Lay the pillow on a flat surface; for instance, the top of a table.
  3. Get a dish and fill it with cold water and some drops of mild-soap. Get a cloth, dampen it with the soapy water and wring-out any excess water.
  4. Use the cloth to gently dab the pillow.
  5. Fill the spray bottle with enzymatic cleaner. Mist the pillow lightly, then allow it to set for about 5-minutes. Use a towel to blot-dry it.
  6. Place the pillow in the dryer for about 20-minutes on the air cycle. You can even set it (the pillow) in the sun to dry.
